Interstate 8 Nighttime Closures Scheduled

ADOT crews will be temporarily closing I-8 at 16th Street between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31 and Wednesday, Sept 1. During the closures all traffic will be diverted off I-8 using the on- and off-ramps. Closures are required to allow crew members to safely remove the concrete barrier, which has been in place on the interstate since September 2009. As a result, I-8 will open to two lanes of traffic in each direction for the busy Labor Day weekend.

Upcoming Construction Activities

Removal of barrier along I-8 is another step towards completion of the 16th Street Widening Project, which is expected to be completed by late September. In the final month of construction, the following work is planned:

  • Painting of the steamboat graphic on the I-8 bridge
  • Installing the pedestrian fence on the I-8 bridge
  • Completing widening of the Union Pacific Railroad bridge
  • Constructing concrete medians between Yuma Palms Parkway and Arizona Avenue
  • Applying a final layer of asphalt between Yuma Palms Parkway and Maple Avenue (just west of Arizona Avenue)
  • Finishing installation of curbs, gutters and sidewalks throughout the project area

ADOT appreciates the patience and cooperation of the traveling public during the reconstruction of this major roadway.  Construction schedules are subject to change.  ADOT will make every effort to minimize the disruption and inconvenience and to complete this project in a safe and efficient manner.
